What to expect from your private growth scan

As you move through your second and third trimesters, it’s only natural to want reassurance that everything is safe and well with your baby. The final NHS scan takes place at 20 weeks, but if you’d like another check-in, our qualified midwife sonographer-led team can provide you with reassuring pregnancy growth scans from 16 weeks onward.

As part of this private growth scan, you’ll be able to visualise your baby’s heartbeat, receive detailed wellbeing checks, and ask our specialist team any questions that you may have.

You should feel supported throughout the full term of your pregnancy, which is why our sonographers build trusting, supportive relationships with everyone who walks through our clinic doors.

Our team brings professionalism, empathy, and trust to every service we provide. Whether you’ve been pregnant previously or this is your first time, we’ll make sure that you leave the clinic feeling reassured by our friendly sonographers.

As part of your private growth scan with us, you’ll receive:

Dedicated Expertise: Your appointment will include your scan, answers to any questions that you have, and time to choose the pictures you’d like to receive. If you’re in your third trimester, we can confirm your baby’s position so that you can start preparing for when you give birth.
Wellbeing Checks: Your safety and the safety of your baby is important to us, which is why our wellbeing checks go beyond what you might experience at other ultrasound clinics. As well as checking the fetal position and your baby’s heartbeat, we’ll check details like your amniotic fluid measurement, placental function, and the estimated fetal weight – all factors of fetal biometry that our qualified midwife sonographers can discuss with you.
Precious Keepsakes: To commemorate such a special occasion, we’ll provide you with x1 complimentary black and white printed image, a printed scan report, and a free 3D little peek (after 12 weeks). You’ll also receive a 20% discount on a newborn photoshoot for our partnered photographer, Ivory White Photography, and can purchase additional images after your appointment.

Such a lovely, calm atmosphere, staff lovely and friendly. Felt very welcomed. Emma was extremely patient and listened to every single worry I had about this pregnancy due to past experiences. I was reassured lots and Emma made sure she communicated through every step she was doing.

Our appointments never felt rushed and to have someone so professional yet so connected to her clients needs and worries is an experience I never thought I’d be able to get.

Everything was explained thoroughly in detail before the scan took place. The lady that greeted us at reception was really kind and welcoming. Emma who performed the scan never disappoints. FAQ's

Can I purchase additional items on the day?

Absolutely! You can upgrade your growth scan experience by adding a digital image and video package, extra scan photos, a heartbeat bear, or gender reveal cannon to your booking. These can also be purchased in the clinic after your scan

If you would like extra scan photos or the digital package, please let your sonographer know at the start of your appointment. Please also let us know if you would like a heartbeat bear, so this can be recorded during your scan appointment.

We also have a lovely boutique area where you can browse baby clothes, pregnancy and baby journals, baby bags, and lots more adorable items!

Can I take videos or photos during my scan?

We understand how special these moments are, and we want you to enjoy your experience with us. However, we kindly ask that you do not film or take photos during your scan. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the moment. Additionally, it allows our sonographer to focus fully on the scan and ensures a calm and professional environment.

We do offer high-quality videos and digital photos of your scan, which can be purchased if you’d like to capture and share the experience.

How can I prepare for my scan?

Preparing for your private growth scan is simple and straightforward. Here are a few tips to help you get ready:

Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water before your scan can help improve the clarity of the images. A full bladder can also help with early pregnancy scans.
Wear Comfortable Clothing: Choose loose-fitting clothes that can be easily adjusted for the scan. This will help you feel more comfortable during the procedure.
Remove any body jewellery: If you have body jewellery such as a belly button piercing, please remove this prior to your scan. This is to ensure that the sonographer can move the ultrasound probe freely across your abdomen.
Arrive on Time: Plan to arrive a few minutes early (no more than 5 minutes before your appointment, please!) to complete any necessary paperwork and relax before your scan. Please note that your allocated appointment time includes filling in your paperwork, the scan, any questions, and choosing your photos. We operate as appointment-only, so please do not turn up without a prior booking.
Bring Your Hospital Notes: If you have any relevant medical notes or records, bring them along including any NHS pregnancy scan reports. This can help our sonographers provide the best care possible. If you do not have any hospital notes, your NHS number is useful if any onward referrals are required.
Bring snacks: If your baby isn't posing well, a little sugar rush might help get them moving. We recommend bringing a sweet treat to encourage your baby to give us some great images.

Please avoid any heavy meals before your scan, we encourage a light snack only.

We’re here to make your experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. If you have any specific questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to us before your appointment.

Can I bring anyone else to my scan?

Yes, absolutely! We believe that as many people as practically possible should be able to meet the baby with you. You can bring up to 5 guests to your appointment to share the moment. It’s a wonderful bonding experience!

What factors can affect the quality of an ultrasound scan?

We do our best to provide you with the clearest possible images during your scan, but sometimes certain factors can make this more challenging. A higher BMI can reduce image clarity due to the increased tissue depth, and the position of your baby, placenta, or internal structures may affect what we can see. Other factors, such as fibroids, previous abdominal surgery, excess bowel gas, or low amniotic fluid levels, can also impact the scan. While we always strive to capture the best images for you, every pregnancy and body is different, so image quality can vary. Rest assured; we will make every effort to get the best possible view for you.

Will the scan identify any health concerns?

Although all our scans are non-diagnostic, in the rare occurrence that your scan identifies any issues, we will ensure that (with your consent) you will be referred to the most appropriate practitioner directly. This may be your midwife, GP, antenatal consultant, maternity triage, early pregnancy unit, A&E or the local fetal medicine department.
